About the courses:
Modern American History– 950-951 (Required Sophomore Course, Full Year Course)
This course examines our nation’s history through a variety of interpretations, including the overlooked perspectives of women, youth and ethnic minorities. Our survey of history focuses on many of the defining moments that represent a change in thought such as the rise of skyscrapers at the turn of the century or the anti-establishment rhetoric of the 1960s. The effects of these moments, be it changes in literary style, politics, art or warfare, are investigated in light of their political, economic and social contexts.
US Government – 952 (Required Junior Course, Semester Course)
This course investigates the various theories of how and why governments arise as well as the numerous forms they take. Using the democratic system as a foundation, students will examine the fundamental documents (The Constitution) that give shape to the American federalist system, its series of checks and balances and the changes it has incurred over time. An in depth analysis of each branch is undertaken to include how it works, the major figures that have worked within it, how today’s citizens can participate and influence it and controversial issues that each has faced throughout history.
